An Introduction

Dear parents,

While we can’t gather together for worship each Sunday morning, we can still redeem this time. To that end, each Sunday evening, we will be posting two questions and answers from A Catechism for Boys and Girls with additional content that will help spark conversation about each question and answer. We hope that this will serve you well through this time. You of course can work ahead if you’d like, but we will only be releasing once a week. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Grace and peace,
Pastor Pat

What is a Catechism?

It’s a series of questions and answers that contain a summary of Christianity.

Why is a catechism important?

It helps give our kids the foundations of faith.

Suggested Use

  1. Pray for your time.

  2. Read the question.

  3. Read the answer.

  4. Read the Bible verses that accompany the question and answer.

  5. Talk with each other about the verses and how to apply them to the answer.

  6. Discuss the “WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?” section as a family.

  7. Memorize the question and answer and review throughout the week.

  8. Review previous questions and answers. The recommended way to use a catechism is constant review. The questions build on one another and make more sense together. Make sure you and your kids have it before moving on.

Things to Keep in Mind

  1. Keep it short.
About 10 minutes to go through the material initially. Work throughout the week on memorization.

  2. Keep it simple.
The key here is to be faithful, not to have all answers, keeping your audience in mind.

  3. Keep it Scriptural.
Help them look up and read the verses in the Bible (if they are able).

  4. Make it fun.
Make a game of it, make a craft, and/or have rewards. If you’re musical, make up a song.
